My Students

By the end of the school year I want every student to know what kind of books they enjoy reading! Many students come into my class saying that reading is their least favorite subject, which breaks my heart; I'm on a mission to change that!

My school is high poverty, with all students receiving free breakfast and lunch.

When I ask my students about their reading habits at home they usually tell me that they only have 1 or 2 books at their house...if that! It is my goal, this year, to make sure that my students find out what type of reading they actually enjoy doing! Do they like to read for pleasure? To find information? To laugh? To be scared? To learn more about a particular person or animal? How can they find out what they really like reading about if they don't have any choice?

My Project

I have been fortunate to start off our year with a hefty supply of books, however my organization of the books is less than ideal due to a lack of storage! We are making do for now with a creative system, but it would make my life, and my students lives, far less complicated if we were able to have dedicated book bins! I took a great deal of time to level every book in our library so that my students are able to easily grab a book on their personal reading level...now we just need any easy way to keep all the levels sorted! I also have asked for a few more books because I can never give my students too many options when it comes to books!

My students cannot read books above their level, and they should not be reading a great deal of books below their level. They need to be reading "just right" books in order to reap the most benefits of their reading! This storage solution will help to greater insure that my students are always in a "just right" text!
