Growing a Garden of Readers... and Hopefully Writers

Help me give my students class sets of Salvage the Bones and the Autobiography of Malcolm X to inspire them to read, reflect, discuss, and write.

My Project

My tenth through twelfth grade students want to read about characters they can relate to and care about. I've found they learn more about history and the world around them through fictionalized accounts of real events or autobiographies of people they are curious about.

I would love to teach my students about Hurricane Katrina through Jesmyn Ward's novel, Salvage the Bones.

Although Hurrican Katrina is more recent history, my students were born after it occurred, and thus have no idea what happened and its impact. The story is told through a family who experiences it. The children in the family are teens who I believe my students can identify with, because they navigate issues my students face.

I'd also like to clear up misconceptions they have about Malcolm X by reading his autobiography. There are lots of lessons for my students to learn through his evolution, particularly the teen males, who are often more difficult to find books of interest. They want to know the truth behind the images they've seen and comments they've heard regarding Malcolm X.
