Great Literature on a Great Carpet

My students need a carpet that is cozy and inviting and big enough for all of them to sit upon comfortably when listening to and enjoying great literature read aloud to them.

Third graders are open-hearted, curious and cooperative children. That is why I am so thankful to be a multiple subjects third grade teacher! My school has all the right stuff. It has a dedicated staff who go the extra mile to ensure that all learners meet their full potentials. It is an urban school with a good mix of lots of different kinds of children. The focus on art addresses the multiple intelligences of all our learners, and sets the tone for a creative-thinking student body. We care about meeting the state standards here at our school, and we also care about the development of the whole child.

An integral part of an effective writing program includes listening to exceptional writing every day. Last year, I was the thankful recipient of many children's books which demonstrated excellent writing. I read each one to my class, and we laughed, cried, analyzed, and wondered our way through the titles. I was able to discuss phrases, sentences, paragraphs and pages that precisely demonstrated an excellent use of a writing trait. This was extremely beneficial for my students. What was missing was the comfy-cozy carpet to sit on together while listening and discussing. I asked my students to sit on the "invisible carpet", which most were willing to do. Staying at their desks was not an option, as students would not have been able to view the illustrations or feel a real part of the group.

This year, I hope to obtain a real carpet on which my students may sit. I need a carpet big enough for all the students to fit on it. In the past, I have purchased inexpensive carpets myself. They weren't really large enough to accommodate the whole class, or they didn't hold up well to wear. I would appreciate a carpet that would look and feel good for years, and be appealing for my students to sit upon. My students would also make good use of such a carpet when participating in lessons taught at the chalkboard.

A carpet like the one I've chosen would be well enjoyed by my third graders because, most importantly, they won't have to sit on the floor. In addition, I've carefully looked for one that is not too babyish and will help them to feel the wonderful shift from lower elementary to upper elementary. This may seem like a small thing, but it is very important indeed. Up until now, they have been learning to read. Now things change and they begin to read to learn. The workload and expectations begin to increase dramatically starting in the third grade. By purchasing this carpet for my class, you will be helping them to make this transition with a little more comfort and style. We would all be exceeding grateful to you for your donation.
