Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach remedial reading to 7th-8th graders. My students read texts on the Holocaust each year in small groups with me, their teacher. We work on their fluency and automaticity and I model fluent reading as they listen to me read aloud occasionally as well. My students often begin the school year with a lack of empathy and respect toward others. I use my classroom as an opportunity to build community, foster generosity, and teach empathy. As we read about the Holocaust my students begin to realize how much they truly have to be grateful for. They begin to realize that they have taken food, shelter, and clothing for granted. Simultaneously, they realize that something as atrocious as this should never have happened and can never happen again. They understand it was wrong. They start to realize mistreating others who differ from themselves is a form of bullying and intolerance. They begin to change their behavior, to model kindness towards others, and become better people altogether.
