Graphing Made Real!

Help me give my students the tools to work with graphs and equations they can use on standardized tests such as the ACT. There are alternative free graphing products but can't be used on the ACT!

My Students

My students crave new and different ways of learning. Teaching any high schooler is difficult but teaching a high schooler math is a whole new difficult. Students want to learn skills that will help them not only in high school but later on in life! We often think that today's youth has a strong understanding of technology when in fact it's almost the opposite! Sure they are awesome at making a Tik Tok or snapping their friends. Ask them to write an email or create graphical representations and they are just as lost as their grandparents. I think they have a want to learn how to use technology to make learning math easier! Due to being in and out of school from COVID-19 students have so many holes in their math education. This is something extremely difficult to overcome with math because everything builds and is intertwined with previous topics. These are such fun, amazing, and enthusiastic students I hate to see them struggling.

My Project

Our students have gaps in key mathematical skills such as graphing. Rather than spending more time reviewing and reteaching these middle school skills we should teach them how to use technology! These graphing calculators can help deepen a students understanding rather than get caught in the nitty gritty of graphing.

Students struggle on a variety of mathematical topics and it is extremely important to help students have the tools to support their learning.

We don't get angry if a student can't multiply two numbers, we simply say use a calculator! What if we had this same thought process surrounding graphing. If a student can't graph by hand but knows how to use the tools to create a graph and then can interpret the graph haven't we made a stronger student? Why does it matter if students can graph by hand? Isn't it more important to understand the surrounding topics and interpret the information in front of them?

Having these new calculators will give students the skills of using technology in order to answer deeper mathematical questions. Although there are cheaper versions, the colored screen and ability to display the table and graph is an important feature that would be used regularly! This money would fund just a small portion of a class set. A class set would total to $5000 so putting a dent in this cost would be amazing!
