Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Technology is becoming more and more relevant in everything that we do, but many students have yet to master how to use school-related technology, such as graphing calculators. This new understanding of technology will increase the potential for learning and achievement for every student involved.
The students at this school are from inner-city Los Angeles, specifically the Pico-Union District.
This part of Los Angeles is widely known as one of the poorest communities in Los Angeles, and as a result, at least 90-95% of the students can't afford a graphing calculator. Due to these financial hardships, the majority of the students have not seen or used a graphing calculator until they have entered my classroom this year. Currently they are either in Algebra 2, Math Analysis Honors, or AP Calculus, which are all predicated around the use of graphing calculators. We have enough calculators for 75% of a class of 40, but in order to give every student the opportunity to master this device, it would be most beneficial to have a graphing calculator viewscreen to demonstrate for the entire class.
My Project
I am asking for 1 graphing calculator viewscreen to hook up to the classroom projector, so the students can visualize and follow along with the use of the graphing calculator in Algebra 2, Math Analysis Honors, and AP Calculus. Such topics in these classes, include graphing linear, quadratic, logarithmic, exponential, trigonometric equations, along with the graphs of derivatives and antiderivatives to in Calculus. This school just opened last year, and has been making small strides academically, but this will provide a great push as these students prepare to take the CAHSEE, CSTs, AP test, and to graduate and succeed in college and beyond.
These students have the ability to succeed and be great, inspirational, and innovative leaders of tomorrow.
We must do everything in our power to help them achieve their greatest potential. Getting this project funded will definitely be a step in the right direction for students that have been through many unfortunate circumstances already in their young lives. Let's give them a reason to believe that they can and will succeed!
