Students at our technical high school are special because of their diverse backgrounds, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. Over 60% of our students identify as non-white. Our district is the third most diverse in the state and qualifies for 100% free lunch. Many of my students are English Language Learners or have learning disabilities and require differentiated and individualized lessons. Resources in low income, urban public school districts are slim, and many of my students have very few resources at home.
Many of my high school students struggle with reading as they are English Language Learners and have learning disabilities.
They often struggle to understand and engage with texts we read, as most of our required curriculum does not connect with their identities, everyday lives, and experiences.
My Project
Many of my students are reluctant readers. I want to foster a love of reading for them by providing them with diverse graphic novels. By providing more books that they are likely to enjoy, I hope to help my high schoolers become lifelong readers.
Graphic novels, Manga, and Anime books fly off my classroom library bookshelves, They have truly fostered a love of reading in my classroom.
Students genuinely enjoy these books and are able to improve their close reading skills with them as they analyze characters, conflicts, settings, plot, and themes. These books feature diverse characters that my diverse students can connect with and better understand, which will help them to engage with their reading as well as the world around them.
