Story boards, splash murals, character posters, found poems and 3-D Bloom’s Balls projects cover the walls of my classroom. My students love to show their understanding of the texts we read by creating vibrant creative visual projects, but the markers, colored pencils, crayons and poster board I’ve bought for my classroom are already running out after two years of teaching! We take great care of our supplies, but they get so much use throughout the year that my students are in need of more to support their learning. In an increasingly technology-driven world, it’s important that my students get a break from screen time and have the opportunity to hone in on creative thinking skills as they create visual projects together. Visual projects help engage all learners in the classroom and help students interact with what they’ve read on deeper levels. Writing papers and giving presentations are not the only ways students show their learning and understanding of texts in my class. I am so proud of the work my students do when given the time and supplies to make colorful projects that show accurate and thoughtful understanding of their reading. When they are able to share and display their projects with their classmates, they take ownership of their learning and build confidence in their work. With these new school supplies for our classroom, my students will continue to be able to explore literature in creative, colorful, and compelling ways.
