Graphic Novels Not Just Novelties

Help me give my students access to stories outside of what they know. In American Studies we will read They Called us Enemy to better understand the experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II.

My Project

This graphic novel will be part of a new inter-disciplinary course: American Studies where we are pairing American Literature and US History. We will be studying both subjects thematically. The students in my classes are curious and driven, persistent and creative, open to new ideas and fun-loving teenagers. Students in these classes have lost their love of reading. Our traditional high school setting is working toward student choice through Universal Design for Learning. Students are eagerly embracing the elements of choice and empowerment.

Studying subjects in a new light and from a different point of view always offers a broader global perspective.

We will use They Called Us Enemy as we study The American Homeland During Times of International Crisis. We hope students will be able to see an alternate perspective of WWII and how our actions and attitudes can impact others.
