Help me give my students engaging reading materials to inspire their passion for literacy!
This project expired on April 30, 2019.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Reading is not just an individual process in 6th grade. My students are highly social, and love discussing books with their peers. Eager readers peek over their friend's shoulder to share a page, and novels pass from one student to the next.
When my students find a book they love, they don't want to put it down!
Because they are from a community heavily impacted by poverty and racism, my students don't often see themselves represented in the textbooks purchased by our district. For at least 40 minutes each day, independent reading time allows my students choice over the material they read. I hope to give them access to a wider set of stories during this instructional period.
Graphic novels are by far the most popular genre among my students, and even the most reluctant readers have found books they enjoy.
My students need new graphic novels to fuel their academic growth and love of reading.
On average, my students have almost grown one year in their reading level since September. However, we still have a ways to go until all of us are reading on grade level. For every minute students spend reading a text at their level, their fluency and comprehension improves. Graphic novels will help more students get the engaging practice they need in order to develop as readers.
