My high school is located in the city of Providence, RI. Most of the students come from a low socioeconomic background. Over 95% of the students at my school qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Several of my students come from single-parent homes, and a few come from group homes.
I teach students with a variety of learning disabilities.
I am responsible for meeting the needs of 15 students in the areas of Math, Science, History, and English Language Arts. My best day is graduation day when I am able to see my Seniors walk the stage and accept the degree they’ve been working toward for four years!
My students are all struggling readers who seldomly read for pleasure. I would like to add to the graphic novel section for my classroom library. Having graphic novels based on the core novels that they are required to read will help my learners gain access and understanding to literary classics.
Having a collection of Marvel, DC, and Manga graphic novels on hand will encourage students to read for pleasure which in turn will help increase their fluency. These novels will open up a whole new world for my struggling readers!
My students are struggling learners who don't like to read for fun. I want to give them the chance to read books on subjects that interest them. Graphic novels give them a chance to read stories with words and pictures. These books will hopefully spark their imagination and make them want to read more. I talked to my students and they picked some books that would interest them. I want to increase my classroom library and make free reading time more fun. I want to spark that love of reading that graphic novel sparked in me when I was their age.
