My student (Girls In Engineering) is an all girls engineering class in an inter-city school. We meet ever other day for a 90 min period and once a week after school for 1.5 hours to work on engineering project designing and building a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) underwater robot for competition.
The Granby High School student population is of 1820 students, out of which an average of 115 students participate in the engineering classes offered.
During the 2012-2013 school year the average female enrollment per class was of 3% and this is the main reason the program was initiated. Once the program was initiated for the 2013-2014 school year and a 1st level all female engineering class was offered the female student enrollment increased to 12%. This effort has resulted in 4 female form the program graduate and enrolling into engineering college programs. Girls In Engineering: after school program is dedicated to promoting young women to enter the engineering fields and inspiring high school girls to follow their academic interests to a career in engineering. The program will allow the girls to: -Develop their self-confidence in engineering -Demonstrate creativity and innovational abilities. -Think critically, solve problems and make decisions of real world problems.
In the Girls In Engineering program will be in the Engineering Studies course. It is designed for students who intend to pursue engineering studies in college, prepares students by emphasizing integration of mathematics, science, and English concepts and skills into engineering problems in a curriculum demanding rigorous study habits and other college-level skills. Students are encouraged to become routinely inquisitive through brainstorming and build prototypes. The students will use this equipment to build project during the school year. Some of the projects are designing CO2 cars, glider airplanes, solar powered foam boats, and bridge structure. In the after school program the the girls via the Marine Advance Technology Education (Mate) Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) program, will design and build an underwater robots. This equipment will be valuable in the building of the ROV. They will be required to cut, drill, shape, materials such as PVC, sheet metals, wood, and plastics.
In April 2013, the girls competed were the first all-girl team to participate in the competition, the girls and their robot, Pippy, made history.
They placed 6th out of 14. On April 26, 2014, Granby High School Girls In Engineering team took second place in the Mid-Atlantic MATE ROV Competition. The team was also recognized with the Best Engineering Evaluation Award. This means that they have MATE-ROV International Competition in Alpena, MI. They were one of 30 teams out of 550 to qualify.
