Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from East Oakland. Most of my students are entering high school and transitioning into a new program. Transitions can be hard for them. They all need to build on different skills such as hygiene, toileting, socializing, learning to write their name, or being able to add money.

Despite their disabilities, they come to school every day ready to learn at their own pace.

They need a lot of support and are learning to ask for help on their own. They are super silly and sweet, and they all bring something new to the classroom.

My Project

My students love to party and celebrate their successes. Graduating high school is something their parents and teachers have been talking about for years. They will graduating with a certificate of completion and move onto the young adult program. They will be learning about being safe in the community, gain skills to become more independent, and job skills. Having multiple lei's at graduation shows pride and is going to bring them so much joy.

A lei is a common symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor, or greeting in Hawaii.

You'll find leis everywhere—graduations, parties, dances, weddings, and yes, even at the office in Hawaii. I know the students will love this and we are planning on putting dollar bills to make it more festive!
