As a teacher in a Title I school, many of my students are faced with several challenges. I have had homeless families, and those with parents in and out of jail. I also have students with physical handicaps and children with autism in the classroom. My class this year is highly impacted with learning disabilities as well as social-emotional needs. I am looking to make a warm positive environment where my students can feel comfortable and safe. I want to have a classroom where they want to be there.
Many of my students are in survival mode.
I need help to make a difference. I am concentrating on flexible seating where students can make a choice and be trusted. Many of our kiddos choices have been taken away from them in their home life. They need to have the power given back to them for optimal learning to happen.
My Project
We need storage shelves and book organization for our classroom library. Our fabulous school district purchased some amazing books for our kids to read and we have ran out of space. A fifth grade classroom can be chaotic. By fifth grade students are expected to accomplish their independent reading tasks, while there are 25 other students working in their space. Student need to be able to access the classroom library successfully and organization is the key. Having the shelves and the book boxes in the library will allow student to find what they need. They are expected to find a "just right" book as well as a book that will hold their interest so they can be successful during Reading Workshop
