This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Research shows if kids are read to, they are better readers. This is because they hear what good reading sounds like. If my students have the opportunity to hear and read along with a story on a cassette player, their independent reading time will be more effective.

Greetings!

I am a third year, 2nd grade teacher in a Title 1 school...that means that my students come from low social-economic households. Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that they can do independently.

My Project

Using the cassette players, I will be able to record stories on my students' independent reading levels. Being able to read quickly and like we talk is called reading with fluency. Beginning to read with fluency is an important skill we learn in 2nd grade. First, working independently during center-time, the cassette players will allow the students to hear what a short story should sound like when it is read. Then, they will read along with the cassette. Last, they will read the story independently. With practice reading a story several times, the students' reading fluency improves and they become better readers.

My students need to hear expert readers read a story to them, even when they are working independently.

Providing my students' with these cassette players will allow them to read a story accurately and with expression. Eventually, making them expert readers!
