My students need melodic percussion instruments for music class! They can play and read melodies, accompany their singing with harmonic patterns, and create their own melodies with improvisation and composition.
My students come to music class excited and ready to make music! I teach elementary music at a Title I school where over 80% of my students are socio-economically disadvantaged. This is my first year at my school and my mission is to develop a vibrant music program where students have the materials they need to enjoy music and be creative!
Every student is important!
Our school has very few classroom percussion instruments. During our 30-minute music class, when students have to wait for a turn to play a drum or triangle, it takes up precious minutes of our class time. I believe every minute counts, and every student counts! Students learn more when they are engaged and excited, and feel their contribution is important. Playing instruments is a vital part of music class, and your donation will help my students have more instruments to play!
My Project
Some musical concepts are very abstract to young students. When we describe notes as "high" or "low", or a melody as moving "up" or "down", young students have a hard time relating the sound of their singing voice to those descriptions. However, when students can play a melody on a glockenspiel, they can see the different sizes of the bars and understand that when they move their mallets to play different bars, the melody is "moving" also!
Instruments can make abstract concepts more concrete for young learners!
For young musicians, there is no substitute for hands-on experience! When students can see, feel, and create the sounds, they are more likely to understand and remember what they learn. I can't wait to hear the beautiful music my students can play!
