As the school year goes on, there are times you need to replenish certain supplies, or add some new ones to the mix. The colored pencils helped add to our dwindling supply. We don't use them as often as crayons because they are more fragile, but colored pencils are a better fit for some projects, and my older students especially like using them. I sure needed some copy paper, as well! In addition to emails, I do send good old-fashioned paper copies of information home from time to time. And although most of my music classes involve singing and playing classroom instruments, we also do some activities that use paper, such as listening lessons where students write or draw responses, and a project we were working on last week where the students are composing rhythms. \r\n\r\nOur old whiteboards were showing their age after several years of use by many, many classes! Last week, my younger students were drawing music notes and writing some rhythm patterns we have played on classroom percussion instruments. When they saw the new whiteboards they were thrilled! \"They are so shiny!\" The kids made their notes \"extra neat\" because the boards were so nice. Older students who read at low levels are using the wordless books as a tool to share complicated vocabulary and storylines without being hindered by their reading skills. The excitement when the new materials arrived was unforgettable—students immediately gathered around the boxes, asking, \"Are these really for us?\" and \"Can we try them right now?\" As soon as I passed out the whiteboards, markers, and erasers, the room filled with proud smiles as students began writing their names, drawing pictures, and practicing their phonics patterns. One student said, \"This feels like real learning!\" and that joy has stayed with them ever since.\r\n\r\nWe now use the whiteboards across every part of our day. During math, students use them to show their work, build number models, and explain their thinking during partner shares. In phonics, they blend and segment sounds, practice building words, and quickly try out new spelling patterns without fear of mistakes—because the clean slate invites them to try again. During whole-group lessons, I use the boards for quick checks for understanding, and I've seen even my shyest learners raise their whiteboards with confidence. One of my favorite moments was seeing two emerging writers practice their sentence writing together, encouraging each other and celebrating every word they spelled correctly.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be launching into a unit on opinion writing and word building, and these whiteboards will allow students to plan their ideas, practice sentence structure, and rehearse their writing before moving to paper. During whole-group lessons, it has become our central spot for modeling reading strategies, writing sentences, and working through math problems together. In small groups, students use the magnetic letters, sentence strips, and whiteboard to build words, practice phonics patterns, and retell stories with visual supports. During morning movement, students rotate through stations using the agility ladders, scooters, and hula hoops. The books have become powerful tools for teaching both reading comprehension and real-world values.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom now feels energized and joyful. Students gather on the carpet with excitement, eager to choose these new books for independent reading, partner time, and small-group discussions. Thanks to you, my students are now able to use digital cameras and media tools to view the world through their own eyes. Many of my students experience their environment differently. They have quickly found photography as a way to create confidence, communicate, and express themselves. At school, kids use this technology to practice vital academic and social-emotional skills, including sequencing, descriptive language, visual storytelling, and collaboration. An ordinary picture can become a powerful learning tool for organizing your thoughts and ideas. \r\n\r\nMy students are particularly excited about using real cameras and equipment, and they develop a sense of independence and pride in doing so. They enjoy taking different kinds of pictures, such as close-ups, and become increasingly excited every time they capture one that works for them. Some students who usually won't raise their hands in class were the first to grab a camera. One student in particular tends to have difficulty verbalising his ideas in class. Photography allows him to communicate what he sees and feels. In other words, through his images, he can share experiences with the people around him. Because of your support, moments like those are possible.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has done much more than gift my students cameras. Thanks to you, they have a voice and a platform.
