Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students do not speak English. Many of them have interrupted schooling. If they are to build lives for themselves, they need to learn English. In order to do this, they need to practice reading, speaking and listening.

My students hail from many different countries including El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Honduras.

Many of them come from poor families who could not afford to send them to school. They arrive at our school having interrupted schooling, and some are not literate in their native language. Yet they are incredibly eager to learn. Our school is quite large with 60% of our students being Latino. The school's motto is "Class, Pride and Tradition." This is also written in Spanish. We have a large Sheltered English Immersion program for Math, Science and History.

My Project

This past year I used CNN's website to show my students news clips about what was happening in their world. They totally connected with it. For this reason, I'm hoping to use Time for Kids as an accessible resource for my students who are learning how to read in English. The themes are engaging and encourage students to want to read. It is so important for me to evaluate and give feedback to my students on their speaking skills and pronunciation. There is a strong emphasis at my school on speaking skills, but teachers often find it very difficult to do a proper assessment because we have no voice recorders. We have to do all the evaluation and feedback on the spot. This is challenging as well as not truly helpful for the students. With voice recorders, students would be able to record their conversation, recitation or performance and I would be able to listen to it many times and use it as a reference when working with students on their speaking and pronunciation skills.

I'm sure you've seen the many negative films, books and articles that have come out recently about our education system.

People are forever critical about people not speaking English in the United States, but they don't properly fund the programs that are working to make this a reality. By funding this project, you can help my students learn English and truly make lives for themselves.
