Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love my students’ determination, resilience, and the unique ways they communicate every day. As a speech therapist in a Title I school in the Bronx, I see firsthand how limited resources impact their access to tools that support their growth. Despite these challenges, my Pre-K students are eager to connect with others and participate in their school community in meaningful ways.

My students will participate in a guided community service initiative focused on promoting communication and inclusion throughout our school.

With teacher support, students will use the iPad to help create simple communication materials such as greeting boards, visual schedules, feelings charts, and recorded messages that will be shared with classrooms across the school. These supports will benefit peers, younger students, teachers, and families by helping create more accessible and inclusive communication opportunities.

Through this community service project, my students will actively contribute to improving communication within our school community while also strengthening their own speech and language skills. Although many of my students are emerging communicators and on the autism spectrum, this project gives them an accessible and meaningful way to help others beyond the classroom.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
