Give Us Something Interesting To Read In Spanish, Por Favor!
My students need 30 copies each of 3 interesting magazines in Spanish to increase their bilingual proficiency. These magazines will motivate them to be proud of being bilingual.
Don't you know so many people who wish they were proficient in more than one language? Well, at our middle school, approximately 160 students are well on the road toward high-level English/Spanish bilingualism. We need more exciting, age appropriate reading materials in Spanish.
My students attend a diverse, mixed income public middle school.
They participate in a Spanish-English Dual Immersion program which has them learning all content subject areas in both languages. Approximately 50% come from Spanish dominant, while the other 50% come from English dominant households. Although they are pleased to participate in a bilingual program, it is sometimes hard for them to value the learning they must do in Spanish. Popular culture references abound in English, and we teachers must work very hard to provide similarly motivational materials in Spanish.
My Project
The Scholastic Magazines in Spanish will provide my students with appealing, modern and up-to-date reading materials about pop culture and current events. These bi-monthly magazines are appealing to the eye, contain age-appropriate articles and are leveled from beginning to advanced. My students will have the chance to read for pleasure in Spanish, which is something that many of them feel is an oxymoron, due to the difficulty of keeping our classroom libraries up to date with exciting and modern Spanish free-choice reading books. I am very excited at the chance to provide them with these fun, well-written periodicals.
Developing students who have a high level of bilingualism is a challenging, yet very worthy goal.
We want all our students to be proud of being bilingual, and providing them with appealing reading materials in Spanish will help us achieve this goal.
