My Students

I teach a 6th grade Language Arts/History core class on the west end of Alameda, California. Of all of the schools in which I have worked over the past 20 years, this is truly the most diverse. We are a Title I qualifying school, with students from all walks of life. About half of our students are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged, and we serve one of the Bay Area's largest communities of homeless/transitional families; these kids sit side by side with the children of tech industry professionals with million-dollar Alameda homes. There is no ethnic or racial majority at our school - every classroom is a reflection of our close-knit, multi-cultural community.

My Project

I have well over 1,000 books in my classroom library, thanks to generous donations and the work of local nonprofits, but very few graphic novels. When I do buy or otherwise get my hands on a new graphic novel, it's checked out on an almost daily basis and worn out within a few months. While my students will read books from a wide range of levels and genres, graphic novels are universally loved by the students I teach and are accessible to everyone, from the best readers to the newcomers still learning English.

I'm hoping to start a good classroom library of graphic novels for my 6th graders, as well as the older middle and high school students who come back to check books out from my room.
