Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students from Camden are urban youth in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Many of my students have experienced varying forms of trauma in their childhood.
Many of our students need additional support in dealing with the effects of childhood trauma and a place to relieve stress and anxiety.
Although our students' resilience in the face of challenging circumstances is undeniable, we know that there is more our school can do to provide these students the tools they need to succeed.
My Project
In past years, suspension has been a tool utilized to respond to disruptive classroom behavior.
As we move to keep students in school, reducing out-of-school suspensions by more than 60%, we are looking to create a space where students can reflect on their behavior, take a short break, and allow themselves to re-enter class prepared to learn.
The drawing table, colored pencils and drawing paper will give students an opportunity to share their feelings and emotions through images; the sensory items and Kiddy Dough will give students items to help them settle and reflect; the yoga mats will allow students to practice yoga and meditation as a means of centering themselves and gaining greater self-control; and, lastly, the tablets will allow students to utilize educational programs to continue improving their literacy and math knowledge while taking a break from their classroom.
