In past years, suspension has been a tool utilized to respond to disruptive classroom behavior. As we move to keep students in school, reducing out-of-school suspensions by more than 60%, we are looking to create a space where students can reflect on their behavior, take a short break, and allow themselves to re-enter class prepared to learn. The drawing table, colored pencils and drawing paper will give students an opportunity to share their feelings and emotions through images; the sensory items and Kiddy Dough will give students items to help them settle and reflect; the yoga mats will allow students to practice yoga and meditation as a means of centering themselves and gaining greater self-control; and, lastly, the tablets will allow students to utilize educational programs to continue improving their literacy and math knowledge while taking a break from their classroom.
