My students need 25 copies of the book "Felicity Learns a Lesson" and 25 copies of the book "Meet Addy."

I am an English/Language Arts teacher to a fabulous group of fourth grade students in a high-need elementary school. My class is a single gender group composed of 25 hardworking girls.

Many of the girls in my class are struggling to learn the challenging state social studies curriculum. As their reading and writing teacher, there are many opportunities for me to help students grow as readers while learning the state social studies standards. I would like to create opportunities for my girls to develop an interest in history so they will retain the information well into the future.

I would like two class sets of books from the American Girl series. One book set is "Felicity Learns a Lesson," which takes place right before the Revolutionary War and teaches about the Boston Tea Party and other historical events of the time. The second set is "Meet Addy." The main character in this story is a fugitive slave during the American Civil War. Both books tie in to the South Carolina social studies curriculum and provide an engaging way for students to learn the content. Our students read about male historical figures each day, so these books provide opportunities for young, female students to relate to the characters and historical events.

Your donation will not only encourage my girls to learn history, it will also help to ensure that they develop a lifelong love of reading.
