My Project

One of my very favorite parts of the kindergarten year comes in December when we read the classic tale: The Gingerbread Man. As we examine many different versions of the story, we compare characters, settings, story refrains, and resolutions. Students learn to sequence events and talk about what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the various stories.

The students love coming to school each day and meeting new gingerbread characters; this project will allow me to send home a copy of Jan Brett's story, Gingerbread Friends, as well as a gingerbread cookie cutter and mini rolling pin to go along with the gingerbread Play-Doh that I will make for my students using the flour, cinnamon, ginger, and cream of tartar.

My hope is that this allows students to share some of the magic of this unit with their families. I love finding ways for students to involve their families in the things that are happening in the classroom, and this project is one way that families can get a little glimpse into the joy and excitement that is kindergarten!

In addition, this project includes several gingerbread stories that are new to me. I am excited to have new stories to fall in love with, and I look forward to adding them to our classroom library and sharing them with my class!
