Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"So why exactly do you think fractions are better than decimals, Stephanie?" I asked. "Because I can visualize them, I can close my eyes and see what you're talking about when you say 3/4. I see a pizza that's cut into four slices and I get to eat three of them."

This conversation is a powerful image of the inner workings of the pre-adolescent mind.

Wavering between the concrete and abstract, many of my students are dependent upon visual representations in math to solidify their understanding of a concept. The SMART technology suite gives access to this understanding during these imperative years of brain formation. As an affordable alternative to a SMARTboard, the tablet allows the teacher and students to control the learning from anywhere in the room. I've used a donated tablet for the past two years, but it has finally died and I am without this wonderful tool in the classroom. In addition to classroom teaching, I've used the tablet to create math movies that have been uploaded to my class website. To date, I've uploaded more than thirty movies, but am on hold until I'm able to get a new tablet. My students and parents find these videos a priceless tool to use at home and for extra support.

My Project

Showing Stephanie a sketchpad file that splits fraction models into slices and graphs lines and functions will grant her success and confidence in middle school math. The ability for her classmates to manipulate these models from around the room engages learners that might otherwise feel timid.

As a turning point for many students, the seventh grade has the ability to propel students into higher levels of math or discourage them into defeat.

As a teacher, I refuse to accept the latter option and would be so grateful to have your help in this mission. Thank you for your consideration and for the consideration of Chevron Classroom Challenge!
