My Students

Our school is part of District Reference Group “H” which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.

As an eighth grade ELA teacher, I have witnessed the great needs of my students.

A high percentage of the students who attend my school receive free and reduced-price lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met as well. These circumstances can make it very difficult for some families to afford basic school supplies. Many of my students are also ELLs and need extra support when reading grade-level materials. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources, especially when it comes to technology.

The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many students are struggling to learn the language while trying to complete their eighth-grade work. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.

My Project

Independent reading is a crucial piece of homework in my classroom. In order to improve students’ reading and comprehension skills, they need to be reading at home for at least 20 minutes a night. Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes students to 1.8 million words a year! Creating a classroom library with appealing books that students can check out to read at home is necessary to encourage my students to read.

My students are obsessed with superheroes and requested the books in this project.

Many of them watch the CW shows like Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl so they want to read the books that go along with these shows. With the new Avengers movie coming out, many of my students want to learn more about the different superheroes that will be in the movie. Because they have already shown an interest in these books, they will be more likely to read them. The more my students read, the more progress they will make in their reading skills, which will help them in all subjects.
