In my classroom, I stress the importance of students taking pride in their work and how much independent reading will help them succeed across all subject areas. As an 8th Grade ELA teacher, I have witnessed the great needs of my students. A high percentage of the students who attend my school are on free and reduced lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met, as well. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures, and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
