My Students

As a reading specialist, I work with beginning and struggling readers to support literacy growth. My students come from all different Socio-Economic backgrounds including English Language Learners. My students are very capable of learning, but sometimes need extra time and assistance to be successful. Once students begin to experience success, it is amazing to see them "take off" on their reading journey!

My Project

As a Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach my ultimate goal is to build a life-long love of reading, but sadly, I see that many students do not like reading. Most kids today would rather pick up an iPad than a book and that truly breaks my heart.

With this project I want to obtain high interest book sets that can be used with reading intervention students to encourage more independent reading.

My goal is to introduce students to many different series from various genres. The hope is by exposing my students to these high interest books, I will "hook" them on a series which would in turn lead to an increase in reading outside of the school day.

Once a student sees that reading can be enjoyable, they will be more inclined to pick up a book and read. Many of these book series are available in our library, so once a student gets "hooked" on one, he/she can continue reading additional books in that series on their own. As we all know, the more students read, the more they grow, so that is what I'm hoping to accomplish by introducing these different series during reading intervention services.
