Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I’m privileged to teach at the Toppenish School District on the Yakama Indian Reservation in South Central Washington. I serve a diverse group of students who seek learning and making it a valuable tool to impact their families and their community.
My students are in need of Duct Tape which they will use to design and create wallets and pencil pouches.
I know, this activity sounds strange, but at the same time interesting! I want to be able to give my students the opportunity to explore their creative side and make something of their own.
With these materials, my students will begin by developing ideas, designing, sketching, and creating a prototype of their wallet and pencil pouch. All these steps involved in creating their designs are embedded in the STEM design process.
My Project
Design and creation are all around us. Everything we own and use was designed by someone. I want to be able to provide my students with the opportunity to be a designer.
My students will be using the Duct Tape, Zippers and Chain Hooks to design and create wallets and pencil pouches.
Being able to do these projects will give my students the opportunity to see the amount of work it takes to think of an idea and go out and make it. I want my students to be able to see how Engineers think of ideas, sketch, design, create prototypes and create a finished model. All these steps coincide to create something useful for the consumer.
