Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students with special needs and I am blessed to work with such a great bunch of students. They come to school everyday excited and motivated to learn. Over the past few years, I have increased the utilization of technology in the classroom from traditional teaching methods. With this, I saw a burst of achievement from my students. Students who once struggled with simply writing with pencil and paper, due to their deficiencies in fine motor skills, are now flourishing because they are able to type on their iPads. Students who once struggled with maintaining attention in the class, due to severe ADHD, are engulfed in lessons because they are able to conduct their own scientific research and utilize online resources to create and build real-life products. Students who struggle with reading fluency and reading comprehension, due to learning disabilities or autism, are able to access the reading through text-to-speech applications and supplementary videos to enhance learning. I can go on forever with how much growth I have seen in my classes over the past years, and I am looking forward to continuing innovating my classroom using technology and research-based practices.
My Project
Technology is wonderful, but sometimes we can't beat the good ole paper and pencil work!! I work with students with special needs for math and science and the one thing I have learned is that this group of students work at different levels with different abilities. With that, differentiation is key!!
Our class goes through more paper and ink than what is rationed at our school site.
On top of the abundant amount of paper we need to use for creating IEPs and other legal documentation, our students require work that is individualized for them. This work can be worksheets, graphic organizers, leveled reading materials, assessments, etc.
