Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are excited and enthusiastic musicians, eager to learn, engage, and perform with the arts. Ours is the designated arts school in Brooklyn so all of our students needed to audition to be here. In my classroom, the goal is to not only engage them as musicians, but as positive, encouraging citizens, ready to face each new day and challenge with a self-confident attitude, mindfulness, kindness first, and sometimes even jazz hands.

My Project

Each day my students excitedly enter the classroom, grab their binders, and get ready to sing! As happens in every class, each student asks, "What are we doing today?" as they enter. For my ensembles that are larger than traditional classes, that question on repeat is not always the most fun. Currently, I communicate our daily plan through our SmartBoard, yet back to back classes and rehearsals often mean that time is lost in transition as I reset for the incoming class.

These white boards will allow the daily rehearsal plan to be posted and color coded by class with the new markers each morning so whenever students enter the room, they know exactly what we are working on without any lag time!

These will serve not only our ensemble classes, but as we transition into music theory, students will know whether or not they need to grab any materials (including one of the new clipboards to lean on) even as the ensemble is leaving and packing up. The colored paper will color code our warm ups, helping me to identify that students are on the correct set of music from a distance.

I'm most excited for the calendar, which will be specific for the musical theater class, allowing them to see which songs are scheduled for the current, and upcoming days, so they can prepare and listen to their music in advance of rehearsals.
