My students need chapter books and transitional seating to assist in fostering a positive and inviting literacy environment in the classroom.

I serve a student body who lives in a low-income developing community which has a dense population and a high illiteracy rate. My students are very hard workers but struggle with reading comprehension. My job as a Social Justice Educator is to provide equity in education by helping my students achieve grade level literacy by any means necessary. Research shows that if a child can't read by 3rd grade, their chances of illiteracy dramatically increase each year.
I learned a lot in my first year of teaching, especially about teaching literacy.
I noticed that students' engagement increases when they are able to read a chapter book together as a whole class. The Balanced Literacy approach in conjunction with Writers Workshop, gives students the opportunity to use many different literacy strategies on one familiar text. I am eager to start Balanced Literacy in my English Language instruction.
My students and I will appreciate any amount to help buy books and other items needed to engage them and encourage them in literacy.
My third graders and I humbly thank you, and we graciously appreciate your donation.
I will use chapter books to teach using the Balanced Literacy approach to teaching English Language Arts. Students and I will read a Wrinkle in Time, and practice different literature strategies to read, analyze and connect with the text. Each week students will have a literature strategy they will use as they read each chapter(s). Additional books will be for the purpose of literature circles. Some students will participate in a small group discussion on a text of their choice.
Creating an inviting reading environment encourages students to read more.
During Sustain Silent Reading time, students will have differentiated seating. They may choose to sit at their desks, on the carpet or on bean bag chairs. I have seen differentiated and transitional seating in other classes and it works really well with students, especially those who are kinesthetic learners.
