Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you engage a roomful of teenagers who all speak different languages? At my school, all students are recently arrived immigrants who are learning English. They come from over 30 different countries and they struggle every day to learn how to communicate with each other.

My students come from Mongolia and Mexico, Brazil and Nepal, and everywhere in between.

Many of them are refugees and many are attending school for the first time in their lives. I am their PE and World History teacher and it is my job to help them be active and engaged with their bodies and minds.

My Project

I am requesting some classroom resources for students to play and learn with. On rainy days, we are inside, but I hope to use the Uno, Chess, Checkers, and Backgammon sets as a part of activities to help students practice their English with each other. In addition, as part of these activities and others, I would like to use the stamps and stickers as a way to formatively assess and give feedback to students who are working in their groups during class.

My students are among the most vulnerable we have in this country.

English Language Learners who are recently arrived immigrants have incredibly high dropout rates, primarily because many schools do not support their academic, language, and socio-cultural needs. Our school was designed to help these students succeed through hands-on activities where students are working together and speaking English together. Please help me help my students succeed.
