I work with an exceptional group of students who work to not only improve themselves academically but to also impact the community around them. My students attend a Title I school that is 100% free lunch. They come from diverse backgrounds and have a strong love for their peers. This year our school will be implementing an environmental STEM program and our school goal is to develop a love of reading in every learner.
Working at a Title I school can make it difficult to obtain classroom resources for the needs of all learners in our classrooms.
Middle school can be a tough place, but reading can help students understand who they are and how they can change the world. Maintaining a love of reading during this time is one of the greatest goals I have for them.
Flexible seating within the classroom allows students to determine how they can best focus on the most important classroom activity...learning to love reading! The goal of this project is to ensure that every type of learner can find a way to become a reader who loves reading, and that starts with having more comfortable options. Twenty-five minutes of every class is dedicated to reading choice novels to promote literacy and fluency growth.
Sitting all day is uncomfortable, and the items I have requested will allow students to choose a successful space in the classroom to be a little more comfortable while they focus on the task at hand.
The stools will give students the option of sitting at a small table together, specifically to work on projects related to their novels. The seat cushions will provide seating for those who would like to relax on the carpet and stretch out a little. Most importantly, options such as the wiggle seats and exercise balls will allow students who struggle to concentrate an extra outlet for energy that does not disrupt their learning. Students who can move while learning retain the information better.
