Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 27 wonderful 5th grade students, which include special education students, magnet students, English Language learners, and intervention students.

They are very enthusiastic about learning and are always eager to explore new things.

They love coming to school every day, and always have a big smile on their faces, despite the socioeconomic hardships they endure in the community in which they live. They attend a school in California, in a low income neighborhood. The school is both a regular and highly gifted/magnet institution. However, my students are part of the regular school, and do not have access to the materials and enrichment activities that the magnet students have.

My Project

This project is 100% a "kid-inspired" idea as my students have always asked me to put together a vegetable garden outside the classroom in order to learn about nutrition and how to create a balanced meal. Well, thanks to Target's generosity that idea can now come to fruition. Students want planters, potting soil, and seeds so they can grow vegetables, such as lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and zucchini. In addition, they would like to have field hockey equipment to stay in shape and reach their goal of 60 minutes of daily activity during P.E.

Students are convinced that by combining a healthy diet with exercise, their physical and mental health will improve, which in turn will help them perform better academically.

Having a healthy mind and body is very important for my students since they want to be the best they can be inside and outside school.

We are very grateful for your support in making this dream come true. My students will not only become more active, but they will also develop healthy eating habits that will ensure they lead healthy lives.
