Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school geometry to 9th and 10th grade students at a founding school. I taught most of them last year (first year of our school's existence), and I am lucky to be looping with them!

Based on our experiences last year, I know they enjoy puzzles and problem-solving, and 95% are kinesthetic and visual learners.

Even though geometry is mostly taught on paper through diagrams and proofs, manipulatives like geoboards are an immense help in visualizing concepts of rigid motions (e.g., translations, rotations, reflections), congruence, similarity and scaling, right triangles, and much more!

My Project

Due to limited school budget at our founding school, we mostly stick to teaching geometry on paper through diagrams and proofs.

Geometry manipulatives like geo boards will help teach rigid motions (e.g., translations, rotations, reflections), congruence, similarity and scaling, right triangles, and more!

My students will be able to use personal geo boards during class to visualize rotations, determine scales of similar triangles, and compare congruent triangles presented in different ways. Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not how they will afford their materials (most receive free or reduced lunch at school).
