This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students get off the bus everyday excited to be at school! I teach a Multi-Handicapped Class for students with multiple disabilities at a Title I School. All of the students at my school receive free lunch with a high percentage of students coming from low-income families.
If you walked in my class first thing in the morning you would probably hear music, laughter, and maybe even see some dancing!
My class serves students with a range of wide range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries Autism Spectrum Disorder, Downs Syndrome, seizure disorders and more. I have students who are non verbal and use sign language as well as pictures to communicate. My students are amazing and have a range of abilities that we want to see blossom.
My Project
A horseshoe shaped table would be very beneficial for the students in my classroom. The benefit of this type of table is that the teacher is within an arm's reach of each student. Students are more focused when they are in close proximity to the teacher, and when students are focused, they are able to make greater strides in accomplishing their goals.
I will be able to provide individualized and differentiated instruction while working with a group of students at our new table.
We are also asking for containers to expand our task basket work system, a stool for the teacher to sit at while teaching at the horseshoe table, and a flip and communicate wrist wrap to help a student express wants and needs.
