Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever grown your own carrots? Eaten a tomato fresh from the garden? Planted a single seed and watched it grow into a full grown plant? Most of our students do not know where their food comes from and much less about how to grow it for themselves. The Garden Club tries to change that!

MAHS is located in South Central Los Angeles, a high-poverty area with a disproportionate number of youth with diet-related illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

The Garden Club works with students in grades 9-12 after school, giving them valuable lessons in growing their own food, organic gardening, eating healthy, sustainability, and stewardship of the Earth. Students gain practical skills and knowledge, work collaboratively and earn community service hours.

My Project

The Garden Club is in dire need of gardening tools, a wheelbarrow for compost clippings, gloves to protect their hands, hand shears, trimmers and clippers to maintain the garden, seeds, seedlings, soil, and compost. Students will learn how to plant seeds correctly, transplant seedlings, compost garden clippings, and properly maintain and care for garden plants. Through their participation in the Garden Club, students will become empowered with practical skills and knowledge, including how to eat healthier.

The goals of the Manual Arts Garden are: To encourage youth to learn where their food comes from.

To teach youth how to grow their own food and how to eat more healthy food. To connect youth to the Earth while providing them with a sense of place and knowledge about their local environment. To foster a sense of community, collaboration and camaraderie among young people and adults. By donating to this project, you will enable these goals to be met!
