Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Gardening Club consists of 2 dozen students in grades 4 and 5. We work very hard after school maintaining the garden located in the courtyard at the center of our school. Our garden was established in memory of one of our 1st grade students who died in a traffic accident walking home from school 3 years ago.
Our garden has become a place of healing, relaxation and hard work, academic and otherwise. The gardening club has increased efforts each year to add another element to the garden. This spring we'll be digging up the bulbs we planted in the fall, preparing the soil for our spring planting and planting a variety of flowers for the late spring/summer/early fall season.
The students in the club that I manage are from a low-income area in New York City and most, if not all, receive free lunch each day. Since we work after school, I would like to provide healthy snacks before we begin work each afternoon. To identify the members of the gardening club, itself a reward for their hard work, I would like to have them create individually designed t-shirts. To advertise all that they are doing to the rest of the school and to our parents, I would like a carton of copy paper.
The garden is a high-traffic area, much used by all of the school. Maintaining it is no easy task, yet students are eager to dig in. Since we introduced a new element this fall, students have been asking me every day when we'll reconvene for the spring.
Your help in funding this proposal will introduce gardening to some of the club members; support our efforts to remember a much-loved student; create an urban oasis in a area where most of what we see is concrete and other inorganic matter; provide a hands-on opportunity for students to explore earth science; and introduce the entire school to the virtues of a safe and healthy hobby, gardening.
