My Students

Seniors are a willful group of people who are ready to take on the challenges of adulthood but often express concern with how to make the best choices in new situations. Government and economics classes are where young people expect to pick up helpful "know-how" on their way to graduation.

Learning to be financially independent is, understandably, a top priority.

I love using student choice and interest to guide instruction.

I need to be able to explain concepts, teach skills, and encourage their natural spirit of inquiry using multiple formats if I'm to meet all of my learners' needs.

My Project

Using games to introduce units or practice content is a fun way to break up what is traditionally considered a dry subject. The first game, "The game of Life" is a great tool to help teach students about budgeting. The second, "Aquire", shows students how business organizations, particularly corporations, compete, sell stocks, and merge.

Games are a great way for students to learn through experience.

Instead of operating in the hypothetical, these tools allow students to use manipulatives and engage in cost-benefit analysis that prepares them for real-world situations. In addition, I have often found that competition allows for social opportunities where students feel more comfortable asking questions, exchanging ideas, and helping each other.
