Games and Wildlife-Watching

Help me give my students games and enrichment through natural observation. These games will keep our library's games shelf updated and fresh, and the bird feeding supplies will hopefully encourage wildlife to visit the passage behind our library.

My Project

Students have blocks of time when they are allowed to visit the library for non-academic purposes. During these breaks, some students read, some assemble puzzles, and others chat or play games. The purposes of this project are to refresh our games shelf and provide materials for our observation station.

While these activities are intended to offer students relaxed, pressure-free enrichment during breaks, games and nature-watching also promote critical thinking skills, mindfulness, and stress-release.

I specifically selected games that students can complete within the time blocks of their breaks. Students tend to avoid certain games because they take too long to finish. Battleship, Checkers, and regular playing cards were specifically requested by students; and What Do You Meme, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, and Bounce Off were teacher recommended.

The back of our library has wall-to-wall windows, which looks out over the Pudding Creek watershed. In 2022 during our last school year, I put up signage for an Observation Station along one corner of these windows. I have seen deer, woodpeckers, a falcon, and other wildlife pass behind the library. I hope with these bird feeders, we will encourage more local birds to visit the trees behind our library so that students may observe them with the binoculars and learn more about local wildlife.
