Future Surgeon's STEM Project

My students need pigs and dissection kits to use as the final culminating activity to reward all they learned about the systems of the body.

My Students

Our 5th graders are a diverse group, usually 30 kids, 1/3 are ELD, and mostly Hispanic. They are typical 5th graders. They are an upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class, and poverty. Our school is over 50% on free and reduced-price lunch, so a lot of poverty and a high ELD population. My school is composed of dedicated, hard-working, seasoned master teachers. We are all striving to bridge the gap and see more kids of all colors and economic levels succeed. This continues to be a challenge we face each year. Many kids come without any supplies and we spend our extra teacher fund to buy basics like paper, construction paper, glue, pencils, ​and rulers. Often we don't spend extra money on science books and kits, yet we do spend money on food for our kids.

My Project

Students learn best by listening to new information than interacting in a modifying way with the new information followed by either teaching it or repeating it. With this project, the students will be fully engaged in life science with the pig dissection. We will cover many of the Common Core Standards in a method that will be meaningful and lasting for these future leaders. Elementary science concepts with a large emphasis on Life and Physical will be covered with a strong focus on all the possibilities for their future. Although they will still read to learn with this project, they will also explore to retain and motivate.

These donations will not only help my classroom, I believe it will help the world in general.

I believe that Einstein, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or other future inventors can be in a class when given the opportunities to explore.

With guidance, encouragement, ​and opportunities, the person with the cure for cancer or solution to global warming may be lurking in a class like mine. That doctor that may find the cure for your illness may have received the start to wanting to study medicine from this.
