My students are diverse. Usually 30 kids, 1/3 is ELD, and mostly Hispanic. They are typical 5th graders. There are upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class and poverty. Our school is over 50% on free and reduced lunch, so a lot of poverty and a high ELD population. My school is composed of dedicated, hard working, seasoned master teachers. We are all striving to bridge the gap and see more kids of all colors and economic levels succeed. This continues to be a challenge we face each year. We have the least amount of technology in our district and are given the least amount of money from our PSO to help in our class, yet we have the highest need. Many kids come without any supplies and we spend our extra teacher fund to buy basics like paper, construction paper, glue, pencils and rulers. This year only 1/3 of my kids came with calculators, so I bought a class supply. Often we don't spend extra money on science books and kits, yet we do spend money on food for our kids.
