Functional Cooking Skills for Students With Disabilities

My Project

My class ranges in age from 14-19 years old. These are students with significant disabilities. Our class focuses on creating as much independence as possible as they grow older and age out of high school. One part of our functional skills classroom focuses on cooking. My students are learning to cook full, healthy meals from beginning to end. Including shopping and cleaning up. We are lucky enough to have a class kitchen but our supplies and appliances are highly outdated.

We need resources to match our growing numbers as well as replace old and broken equipment.

The resources here will help our students to be more independent in preparing healthy food for themselves and contribute to their family. In order to do this in a classroom environment the students need to learn to work with appliances that they use at home and in their future living situations. This means cooking on the oven, baking, using a microwave, air fryer or slow cooker. These appliances are also necessary because in a classroom environment there is not always space to cook and teach. So having equipment we can bring out into our classroom where there is more space for everyone to be involved is imperative. Our students are making huge progress in cooking on their own and doing things their parents never imagined they could do to contribute to their households. With the needed supplies we can have unimaginable success.
