Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our elementary school serves students in grades Pre-K-5 in the Fordham area of the Bronx. Our school is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a school-wide framework to promote positive behavior, reinforce expectations, and reduce disciplinary incidents.

Our PBIS model is intentionally aligned with the CASEL Framework, emphasizing the development of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making to support the whole child.

Many elementary students face challenges related to emotional regulation, peer relationships, motivation, and behavioral expectations—particularly in the aftermath of increased social and emotional stressors. Without consistent, positive reinforcement, students may struggle to internalize appropriate behaviors and feel disconnected from school culture.

Research shows that positive reinforcement systems, when paired with SEL instruction, significantly improve student behavior, engagement, and emotional well-being. However, limited funding restricts our ability to provide meaningful incentives that motivate students and reinforce positive choices.

The M.E. Shop is a school-based PBIS incentive store where students earn “M.E. Bucks” for demonstrating positive behaviors aligned with school expectations and SEL competencies. Students can redeem earned points for age-appropriate toys, school supplies, and motivational items.

Behaviors Reinforced Include:

Demonstrating kindness and empathy

Managing emotions appropriately

Following school expectations

Showing responsibility and perseverance

Building positive peer relationships

Alignment with CASEL Framework:

Self-Awareness: Students reflect on their choices and emotions

Self-Management: Reinforced behaviors include impulse control and goal-setting

Social Awareness: Incentives promote respect and empathy for others

Relationship Skills: Students are recognized for teamwork and communication

The M.E. Shop empowers students to take ownership of their behavior while fostering intrinsic motivation through consistent positive reinforcement.
