Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Media Center is in dire need of updating in order to meet the needs of 21st century leaners.
Creating a MakerSpace is one of the ways that students will be able to collaborate, compete and create with hands-on materials for designing, tinkering, building and competing. These items will foster persistance, creativity and innovation; skills that are vital for success throughout school and beyond.
These items will be available for students to use throughout the day. MakerSpace morning is a time when students can come to the library before school begins and spend time creating. Additionally, students can use the MakerSpace at any point throughout the day with a pass. These items also provide social emotional support for students with disabilities, including students who are neurodivergent or have anxiety/depression.
Secondly, these items will be used in collaborative lessons with content teachers aligned to science and math standards where students can use manipulatives to demonstrate their knowledge before, during or after a unit. For example, 3D pens allow students to create models of scienitific ideas related to the human body, cells, rockets, insects etc. They also work well with math standards for creating geometric shapes and tetra boxes. Legos can be used to teach parts to whole, fractions, building square numbers etc. The snap circuits allow for students to tinker and use engineering skills to create a variety of circuit systems.
Finally, MakerSpace days are a great incentive for positive student behavior and achievement.
My students are eager to jump into new experiences and explore and expand on new ideas. They are the inventors and entrepreneurs of tomorrow, but they need the stepping stones to get there. These resources will allow them to do just that.
