Mrs. Amanda T. Hutchins from Altha FL is requesting Art Supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students consumable materials they need to do project-based learning STEM activities.
I teach sixteen precious first graders in Calhoun County, Florida. It is in a rural community approximately forty-five minutes northeast of the Gulf of Mexico. In recent days, over half of my students have lost their homes due to the effects of Hurricane Michael when Category 4+ winds destroyed most of their homes in our small town. Thankfully our newly built school received only minimal damages. Most of my students now regard our school as their safe haven where they can escape the scenes of reality. Our new norm is to see blue tarps on each and every roof, downed trees, and debris piles full of damaged personal belongings. Our classroom is a refuge for my students. It is the only thing which has remained unchanged post- Hurricane Michael.
Each and every Friday afternoon in my classroom, my students participate in a project-based learning STEM activity. This type of activity allows my students to make real-world connections to the material or topics we have covered or will be covering in class the following week. The students enjoy putting their new knowledge to work by demonstrating their creativity while communicating and collaborating with peers. By doing projects on Fridays, it has improved my classroom attendance rate and classroom misbehavior throughout the week. Consumable supplies, like glitter, paint, and pom-poms, are needed so we can continue doing project-based activities. School funds are simply unavailable at this time due to budget constraints my district is facing due to the damage and losses that have occurred from Hurricane Michael.
