My Students

The community in which our school is located is very close but suffers from high poverty and a high crime rate.

Students at our school are wonderful and have high goals, but they lack the experiences and skills that many of their more affluent peers have.

Some of our classes have more than 50% of the students that are currently English language learners. We are always looking for ways to give our students a competitive edge to compete with the students not living in poverty.

We spend more time with many of our students than their families because their family members work second and third shifts to provide for their needs. This leads to a lot of unsupervised time or a lot of siblings raising siblings. Our students lack many of the social-emotional skills that are expected in the real world. They face many challenges every day that are beyond the understanding of most people outside of an urban setting with high poverty.

My Project

We are in the process of opening a school free store for students. Students will be able to go in and shop for things their families may need. We would like to try and have full shelves with a variety for products so it feels like a real store when students shop.

Have you ever tried to concentrate when you were worried about what you were going to make for dinner?Imagine that worry as a kid, but because you don't know when you will have food at home.

For too many children in our school this is a reality that we have the chance to change with your help.
