My kids come to school with many of the challenges that come with poverty, but we don't let that hold us back. Last year as seventh graders we built an amazing bond and I convinced my administration to let me move up with them to eighth grade. They are a wonderful group of kids! We have students new to the country with very limited English skills, students in gangs, students that deal with violence and poverty everyday, but they come to my class and we work past all that to do some outstanding work. Reading Shakespeare in 7th grade, creating an integrated science/art project that is being displayed in several galleries around the city are reasons my students are excelling. In a few weeks we will be designing and building catapults to launch paint filled balloons at our school building to make an abstract art mural while studying physics. Pretty cool, huh! My students are great kids that just need people to believe in them and chances to be successful.
